Things are beginning to hot up at World Routes, as the winner of Birmingham Airport’s ‘Hello Curry’ competition will be served to industry experts for the first time today.
Served direct from the Airport’s exhibition stand, the winning curry will be making its debut on the world stage, giving thousands of delegates from across the globe the opportunity to sample the true taste of Birmingham – a city renowned for being the birth place of the Balti.
The Birmingham Airport ‘Hello Curry’ competition was launched back in June, urging local chefs to submit ideas for a signature curry that can represent Birmingham across the world and bring the city to life.
The winning team, led by Head Chef Rashpal Sunner from Five Rivers á La Carte restaurant, cooked a creamy Saag Punjabi served with Makhi di Roti (roti made with chickpea and maize flour) to claim number one spot. Now representatives from the travel industry will be able to try this winning dish for themselves.
The competition saw a high number of entries from all around the city take on the challenge, all bidding to represent the city on the world stage. The competition came to a head at the Birmingham Chilli Festival in July, where the winner was announced following a live cook-off final.
Jo Lloyd, Marketing Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “Birmingham is a city famous for it’s world class restaurants, so we asked top chefs from across the region to come up with a signature curry that reflects all that is great about Birmingham.
“We were thrilled to name Five Rivers á La Carte restaurant as the overall winner of our Hello Curry competition. This delicious new recipe will be served direct from our stand to delegates attending the 2012 World Routes conference in Abu Dhabi, giving the world the chance to experience the real taste of Birmingham.”
Jo added: “We invest heavily in business development around the world, working with major airlines to open new routes to Birmingham and promoting all the region has to offer.”
