What’s On The Horizon For: Aalborg Airport

During Routes Europe 2025 in Seville, Aalborg Airport told Routes about its recent success in charter operations and how the Danish airport plans to expand its air connectivity across major European cities.

Located in Denmark’s North Jutland region, Aalborg Airport (AAL) is the country’s third-largest airport and a key transport hub for central and northern Denmark. The airport welcomed more than 1.4 million passengers in 2024, a 1.8% year-over-year increase.

In 2025, AAL has strengthened its international network with the expansion of Norwegian’s route to Nice, now operating for the full summer season. The route is the only direct air link from western Denmark to southern France, representing a notable milestone in the airport’s development strategy.

North Atlantic connections have seen notable growth, with Play Airlines resuming services from Reykjavik, Iceland, while Air Greenland is set to launch a weekly seasonal service to Nuuk in June, further enhancing the airport's northern network reach.

Charter operations have emerged as a strong growth segment. The airport recently introduced its first service to Kenya and announced new flights to Egypt set to begin in 2025—broadening its footprint in Africa.

With a catchment area of approximately 2.4 million potential passengers, AAL maintains a strong year-round network to major regional cities, complemented by summer services to Mediterranean destinations.

Speaking at Routes Europe in Seville, Annika Liljenberg, AAL’s director of route development, said the event plays a vital role in the airport’s growth plans.

“It's always great to come here and actually meet the partners we have and connect with them—and also to meet new airlines,” she said. “Everything has been working really well, so we're really happy with this year’s event.”

Looking ahead, AAL is prioritizing enhanced direct connectivity to major European cities and hubs with Paris, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, London, Stockholm, and Helsinki identified as key target destinations. The airport also aims to increase frequencies on existing routes and has long-term ambitions to reintroduce long-haul flights.

To communicate its latest developments, unserved route opportunities and event attendance to potential airline partners, AAL utilize its Routes 360 membership
