Mexican ULCC Viva Aerobus has launched domestic service between Monterrey Airport (MTY) and Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) in the state of Oaxaca.

The route will be flown 3X-weekly with Airbus A320-family aircraft. Meanwhile, the Airports and Auxiliary Services, which runs the airport, and Grupo Aeroportuario Turistico Mexicano are combining to invest MXN2 billion ($180 million) to modernize the airport. The investment “responds to the enormous growth in the influx of passengers in recent years and its consolidation as one of the favorite beach destinations nationally and internationally,” according to a PXM statement.

Oaxaca Tourism Secretary Saymi Adriana Pineda Velasco says the new route shows “the enormous potential of Puerto Escondido ... as a flagship destination in Mexico and the world.”

Pineda Velasco adds that increasing PXM connectivity is critical for developing tourism in Oaxaca.

Viva Aerobus says the route is part of its effort to meet “growing demand for sun and beach tourism.”

PXM reports it has already exceeded 2019 traffic levels.
