SINGAPORE—Taiwan’s Taichung International Airport (RMQ) has completed a three-year upgrade of its two terminals, which increases its annual passenger-handling capacity from 2.9 million to 3.69 million.

During an inspection of the expanded airport, Taiwan Premier Chen Chien-jen said July 10 that a third terminal would be built at Taichung to increase international connectivity to Central Taiwan.

The government plans to build subway lines and transportation infrastructure to support the further growth of the airport.

In 2019, Taichung handled 2.8 million passengers. During the pandemic it underwent a NT$1 billion (US$35 million) upgrade.

Taiwan's Civil Aviation Authority has told local media that from Taichung only four international connections—to Hanoi, Ho Chi-Minh City, Hong Kong and Macau—have resumed, a long way from the 14 points before the pandemic. Charter flights to South Korean destinations Busan and Jeju as well as Vietnam's Da Nang are planned for the coming weeks.

Data from CAPA/OAG shows Vietjet Air is currently offering the most capacity in terms of available seat kilometers (ASK) out of Taichung, although Uni Air and Mandarin Airlines provide the most seats with their ATR 72s.

Taichung is the fourth busiest airport in Taiwan after the two Taipei airports and Kaohsiung.
