ROUTES AMERICAS: Avianca Adds Havana

Colombian national carrier Avianca is to inaugurate a new link between Bogota and the Caribbean island of Cuba with a twice weekly connection to Havana. The service is due to commence on March 30, 2012 and will be operated using an Airbus A319.

There are currently only limited links between Colombia and Cuba with just weekly offerings on the Bogota – Havana route from COPA Airlines Colombia (formerly AeroRepublica) and Cubana. In the past year an estimated 30,000 O&D passengers travelled on this route with a wider 51,000 passengers flying between points in the two countries in 2011. This is a market that has seen steady growth with traffic almost doubling over the past five years.

Although this will be Avianca’s only link to Cuba its sister carrier TACA Airlines already serves the island, expanding its network in August 2011 with a three times weekly link to Havana from its San Salvador hub. TACA also offers a six times weekly flight to the Peruvian capital Lima from Havana.
