Romanian carrier HiSky Europe will open service between Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport (OTP) and New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in 2024.

The carrier recently gained permission from the U.S. Transportation Department to fly to the U.S. HiSky will operate the OTP-JFK route, with flying time of around 10 hr., 4X-weekly from June 7, 2024.

The service will be the only nonstop connection between OTP and JFK. The airline will deploy an Airbus A330 on the route.

“This is a significant milestone for HiSky and even more so for Romania and all passengers wishing to travel across the ocean without stopovers or time wasted at other airports,” CEO Iulian Scorpan says in a statement. “The [U.S.] is now a viable travel option for the first time since air travel became accessible to everyone [following the pandemic] ... Three years ago, when we began operations, we aimed to be the primary choice for Romanian passengers. We've proven our worth through thousands of flights across Europe.”

HiSky operates eight international routes from OTP, flying to: Brussels; Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Bordeaux, France; Chisinau, Moldova; Dublin; Frankfurt; and Tel Aviv (currently suspended).
