SRI LANKAN AIRLINES ADDS INDIAN LINK
From February 1st 2011, SriLankan Airlines will begin services from its Colombo hub to Cochin, India. The route will be operated on a daily basis with A320 aircraft. Sri Lankan Airlines already serves Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Trivandrum and Tiruchirapally. Sri Lankan currently operates a total of 50 weekly flights from Colombo to India.
AIR ARABIA HEADS TO KUALA LUMPUR
Sharjah based low-cost operator Air Arabia has announced its first scheduled services into South East Asia with planned daily services to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur. The route will be inaugurated from December 16th and will be an extension of Air Arabia’s existing service from Sharjah to Kathmandu, Nepal, which is operated twice daily. The extension to Kuala Lumpur will be operated on a daily basis with A320 equipment after Air Arabia secured fifth freedom traffic rights on the Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur sector.
QANTAS TO LAUNCH NON-STOP MELBOURNE TO DARWIN FLIGHTS
From May 2011, Australian national carrier Qantas will begin non-stop flights between Melbourne and Darwin to be operated thrice-weekly with B737-800 equipment. Qantas will compete on the route with Jetstar Airways which operates ten-weekly flights, Tiger Airways which operates four-weekly flights and Virgin Blue which operates a daily rotation. IATA BSP data shows that over 267,000 O+D passengers have flown the route between July 2009 and July 2010 which Jetstar Airways having a 48% share of the market.
TRANSASIA AIRWAYS PLANS NEW CHINA LINK
Taipei based Transasia Airways will add scheduled services on a weekly basis from Sung Shan (TSE) to Hefei, China. The route is set to be operated with A320 equipment. There is no existing service on this market, however China Eastern does operate a daily service from Taipei Taoyuan to Hefei on a weekly basis also.
AIRASIA BOOSTS CHENNAI SERVICES
Kuala Lumpur based AirAsia has announced plans to increase its existing services into Chennai. The low-cost operator currently operates Chennai on a daily basis which will be increased to an eleven-times weekly from January 21st. AirAsia competes on the route with Air India, Jet Airways and Malaysia Airlines, all of whom operate a daily service.
THAI AIRASIA LAUNCH DENPASAR SERVICE
Effective December 17th, Thai AirAsia will begin services from Phuket to Denpasar, Indonesia. The route will be operated four-times weekly with A320 aircraft. There is no existing year-round service on this sector.
