THE END FOR MEXICANA?

Last weekend Mexicana announced it is to cease all operations from 12 noon on 28 August. The announcement, includes all flights operated by Mexicana mainline as well as regional carriers Click and Link. Tenedora K investment group had only recently taken over Mexicana from Nuevo Grupo Aeronautico (NGA). Tenedora K is still trying to rescue Mexicana, with the rescue plan relying on the Union signing a deal to enable the labour force to be cut by 70%. The investment group could struggle to bring the carrier back a number of the routes are being targeted by competitors, for example Air Canada has announced a number of services to Mexico City from Montreal and Vancouver.(See below)


AIR CANADA RAMPS UP MEXICO CITY SERVICES

Air Canada is to operate between Montreal and Mexico City on a daily basis from November 1st 2010. The route was previously operated by Mexicana with an Airbus 319. The service was operated 10 times per week during August 2010, Flightbase 23-30 August 2010.Air Canada is also going to increase its frequency on it service between Vancouver and Mexico City from five times per week to daily from the 1st December 2010.


NEW COSTA RICAN LINK FOR FRONTIER

Frontier Airlines is to start a service between Liberia, Costa Rica and Denver. The carrier already serves San Jose, Costa Rica from Denver, but the carrier will now operate to Liberia from its Denver hub.The service will operate weekly on Sundays from the 13th February 2011 with an A319. No other carrier currently serves the route between Denver and Liberia. However, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and US Airways operate to Liberia from the US.


VIRGIN AMERICA LAUNCHES SERVICES TO MEXICO

Virgin America has announced its first scheduled services to Mexico. From December 16th it will begin a five times weekly service to Los Cabos from its San Francisco base, which is currently operated by Alaska Airlines and United Airlines. Effective January 20th it will begin services to Cancun from San Francisco (thrice-weekly) and the previous day will link Cancun with its other west coast base of Los Angeles on a five times weekly basis. From Los Angeles it will face competition from Delta and United , however Mexicana had offered a daily service. Whilst from San Francisco, United offers a once-weekly route to Cancun.


DFW GAINS BARBADOS SERVICE

American Airlines has announced it is to start a thrice-weekly Barbados service from Dallas/Fort Worth starting the 16th December 2010. The service will be operated with a Boeing 757. American currently services Barbados (BGI) from its New York JFK and Miami hubs, whereas American Eagle serves Barbados from its San Juan hub.
