Mexicana plans significant expansion from Cancun base
Mexicana's significant expansion plans commence on the 14 December . Plans include new base establishment for its regional subsidiary Link. The carrier, that already has 2 established bases in Guadalajara and Monterrey will introduce new international flights from Cancun to Washington, Dulles; Bogota, Colombia; San Jose, Costa Rica; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Flights to San Juan will be operated by Mexicana's low-cost unit Click with Boeing 717 aircraft.
Link also plans to launch service to Guatemala and El Salvador.
Mexicana CEO Manuel Borja explains the focus of the Cancun hub is to supply connections to Latin America and the USA.
Borja says Mexicana plans to base two Link Bombardier CRJ200s in Cancun. The CRJs are the final two aircraft from a leasing agreement Mexicana concluded with Bombardier earlier this year for 15 CRJ200s ahead of Link's launch on 15 March.
Link's Cancun base joins the carrier's two already-established bases in Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Mexicana currently offers flights from Cancun to Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Chicago and Havana. Once the new service begins Mexicana will offer a combined total of 15 domestic and international routes from Cancun.
