Lufthansa to Launch Bavarian Link to Mexico City

German national carrier Lufthansa is to inaugurate a five times weekly link between Munich and Mexico City from March 26, 2012, supplementing its existing daily service from Frankfurt. The flight will be operated by an Airbus A340-600.

“We are delighted to be able to offer a connection from our Munich hub to Central America,” said Thomas Klühr, a member of the Executive Board at Lufthansa German Airlines. “In economic terms, in particular, Mexico is gaining in importance for the Bavarian market.”

08092011 - LufthansaIn the past year an estimated 1.1 million O&D passengers travelled between Europe and Mexico. Germany is currently the third largest market, accounting for 14.1 per cent of the total traffic flow. But, this figure is growing with around a 10.7 per cent rise in numbers over the last year versus the previous 12 month period (157,000 versus 142,000).

There are currently no direct flights between Munich and Mexico City but already an estimated 17,000 O&D passengers make the journey between the two cities. Just over a third of these are currently making use of Lufthansa’s existing flights from Frankfurt but there is notable leakage to rivals via Madrid (16 per cent), Amsterdam (13 per cent) and Paris (10 per cent).

Mexico City has a population of 30 million, making it one of world's largest metropolitan areas. The city is the political, business, social and cultural capital of the country and also its largest transport hub. Moreover, with its numerous museums and monuments, it is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.
