Jet2.com Launches Leeds Bradford – Berlin Flight

UK low-fare carrier Jet2.com has announced it has opened reservations for the only direct scheduled service from Leeds Bradford International Airport to the German capital of Berlin. The airline will offer a three times weekly flight on the route from June 1, 2012, just two days before the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens in the German city.

The route announcement follows just a month after the 17th World Route Development Forum (World Routes) that took place in the German capital at the start of October and Leeds Bradford International Airport’s Commercial Director, Tony Hallwood, highlighted the important role the event played in formalising the new service.

“Following a successful World Routes conference in Berlin last month, we are pleased that Jet2.com will now introduce a direct link to the German capital from Yorkshire in 2012. We acknowledge the role that the conference played in creating increased awareness of one of Europe’s fastest growing cities,” he told The HUB at the formal launch of the new route this week.

Jet2.com is currently the largest operator at Leeds Bradford and with the addition of Berlin is offering flights to 40 destinations from the airport. An analysis of the November schedules show that it will account for 38.6 per cent of the available scheduled seat capacity this month; its closest rival Ryanair has 1 30.5 per cent share. An estimated 116,000 O&D passengers travelled between the Yorkshire airport and Germany last year, with Jet2.com already offering flights to Düsseldorf and Ryanair to Weeze.

“As our flagship base, Leeds Bradford International Airport is extremely important to us. Not only is Berlin our second German destination, in addition to Düsseldorf, it is also our 40th route from the airport. This highlights just how committed we are in continuing to deliver more exciting destinations, so that passengers from the region have plenty of choice when looking for great value flights to European hotspots,” said Andrew Merrick, Finance Director, Jet2.com

Berlin is a diverse, modern and dynamic city which draws in thousands of tourists each year. Major historical attractions include the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Berlin Wall, as well as the Reichstag – the seat of German parliament. Potsdamer Platz was regenerated after the Second World War and is now home to a series of spectacular buildings.

“We are very excited about flying directly to Germany’s vibrant and cosmopolitan capital, Berlin. I’m sure it will be a very successful addition to Jet2.com’s schedule from Yorkshire’s Gateway Airport, as Berlin is one of the most visited cities in Europe and one of the most requested destinations by our passengers,” added Tony Hallwood.
