ITA Airways and Spanish LCC Volotea have signed a codeshare agreement based around the two airlines’ operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO).

The codeshare accord will enable ITA to expand its connections to medium-sized European markets served by Volotea from FCO. The Italian carrier’s passengers will also be able to connect from ITA’s flights to Barcelona El-Prat (BCN) and Madrid Barajas (MAD) airports onto smaller markets served by Volotea from the Spanish hubs.

Volotea’s passengers will gain access to ITA’s domestic network and flights to major European hubs served by the Italian airline from FCO.

ITA will place its code on Volotea’s flights from FCO to Asturias and Bilbao, in Spain, and Bordeaux, Lourdes/Tarbes, Nantes and Strasbourg in France. The Italian carrier will additionally place its code on Volotea’s domestic services from both BCN and MAD to Asturias, Murcia and Vitoria.

Volotea will place its code on ITA’s flights from FCO to European cities Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London Heathrow, Paris—where ITA serves both Charles de Gaulle and Orly—and Zurich. The Spanish carrier will additionally place its code on ITA domestic flights from FCO to Brindisi, Catania, Genoa, Milan Linate, Palermo, Reggio Calabria, Tirana and Trieste.

“The agreement strengthens Volotea’s commercial visibility in new European markets and allows ITA Airways to expand its offering by including destinations served by the LCC’s network,” the airlines said in a joint statement.

ITA CEO Joerg Eberhart said the codeshare agreement with Volotea expands the Italian airline's “connectivity to and from Rome Fiumicino and [makes] it easier to reach numerous destinations in Italy and Europe with a single ticket.”

According to OAG Schedules Analyzer data, Volotea operates a total of 8,982 two-way weekly seats from FCO.

The carriers said the codeshare agreement will be fully in effect “once the technical implementation is completed.”
