SPANAIR TO FINLAND

Fresh from agreeing a codeshare with Blue1, Barcelona based carrier, Spanair has revealed that effective November 1st, it will launch a twice-weekly service from its main base to the capital of Finland,Helsinki. The route will be operated with A320 equipment, and the Star Alliance member will compete with Finnair, which operates 7 weekly flights and will complement Blue1 services, consisting of four- weekly flights.

IATA BSP data shows that over 115,000 O+D passengers have flown the route between June 2009 and 2010.

ALITALIA TO RESUME RIO SERVICES IN 2011

SkyTeam member Alitalia will resume services to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. The route will begin June 4th, 2011 and will increase at the end of June to a four-times weekly operation. The route is set to be operated with A330-200 equipment from Rome Fiumicino, and will complement its existing B777-200 service to Sao Paulo.

RAK AIRWAYS RESUMES OPERATIONS THIS WINTER

RAK Airways is set to resume operations from October 10th 2010 with two new services from Ras Al-Khaimah, in the UAE, to Kozhikode in India and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Both routes will be operated with B737-800 aircraft on a four-times weekly rotation. Both markets are a natural start point for RAK Airways with large traffic flows to Saudi Arabia and India from the UAE.

DONAVIA EXPANDS ISTANBUL SERVICES

Donavia, the regional subsidiary, which was formerly known as Aeroflot Don, has announced expanded services in Istanbul Ataturk Airport. The airline already serves Istanbul from Rostov on Don and Sochi on a thrice-weekly basis, operated with B737 equipment. However this winter the carrier will expand services into Istanbul from Samara and Vladikavkaz (thrice-weekly) as well as Volgograd and and Anapa (twice-weekly), to be operated with B737-500 aircraft. IATA BSP data shows that nearly 1 million O+D passengers flew between Russia and Turkey between June 2009 and June 2010 with Turkish Airlines carrying 46% of this traffic.

SPANAIR ADDS AFRICAN CONNECTIONS

In a busy week for Spanair the carrier also announced two new services to Africa from Barcelona From December 18th it will launch service to Bamako, Mali. This will be operated once-weekly with A321 equipment. From February 14th, the Star Alliance member will launch A320 service to Tripoli, Libya to be operated on a thrice-weekly basis. Both routes are currently unserved.
