Continental Airlines is to launch a daily service between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and the German city of Stuttgart from June 9, subject to Government approval. The flight will be operated by a Boeing 757-200 configured with 16 BusinessFirst and 159 Economy seats. Stuttgart will be the fifth German city to be served by the new United, formed last year by the merger of Continental and United Airlines.

The table above shows that Continental Airlines has developed a successful formula operating its Boeing 757-200s on transatlantic flights into Europe. It currently uses them on 19 of its 30 routes. It also already serves the German cities of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich from its Newark Liberty International hub in New York as well as flying to Frankfurt from Houston. In total, with the addition of the new Stuttgart route it will offer 42 flights per week offering over 9,000 seats. This will be the second transatlantic link between Stuttgart and the US, with Delta Air Lines also offering a daily flight to Atlanta.

Continental Airlines is currently the fourth largest operator between Germany and the US, but with its forthcoming merger with United Airlines and partnership with fellow Star Alliance member Lufthansa, they together hold a 73 per cent share of the market. Lufthansa currently has over 200 flights per week to the US on 26 different routes from its hubs at Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich.
