Azores Airlines has outlined plans to further grow its North American network with two new routes from the Portuguese archipelago Madeira. The move comes a month after the carrier scheduled the launch of three new transatlantic services from Porto Airport (OPO) using its fleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft.

The latest expansion sees the airline add seasonal nonstop weekly flights from Funchal (FNC) to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Operations to BOS run from June 4, 2024, through Sept. 25, while YYZ commences on June 7 through Sept. 28.

Azores Airlines briefly served FNC-BOS nonstop in December 2016 and January 2017, while it already offers a one-stop route between FNC and YYZ via Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The latter service will be maintained despite the addition of the nonstop flights.

Teresa Gonçalves, CEO of Azores Airlines owner SATA Group, says the decision to add further North American service from FNC follows the success of the carrier’s New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) route, which began in November 2021. The flights mainly target inbound U.S. tourists.

In August, Azores Airlines scheduled plans to begin operations from OPO to YYZ on June 1, followed by BOS on June 4, and JFK on June 6. Service on each of these routes will be available once a week, scheduled on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively.

The routes from OPO will mark the carrier’s first transatlantic flights from mainland Portugal since ending operations to BOS and YYZ from Lisbon in October 2017. At present, the carrier provides 11 routes to various North American destinations, all originating in the Azores.
