American Airlines to Expand Mexican Links
American Airlines is to compete more strongly against Continental Airlines in the US-Mexico market with plans to launch services to another three destinations in the country. The carrier last week launched a weekly flight from Veracruz to Dallas Fort Worth and is awaiting government approval to further expand in Mexico. An executive from the airline declined to confirm where it would fly, simply stating that the routes will be announced as they are approved by the authorities and will commence operation in June.
Approximately 16 million O&D passengers fly between the two countries every year, with American’s Miami International - Cancún International leisure service the market leader, accounting for around 250,000 passengers per year.

As the table above shows, American Airlines is by far the market leader between Mexico and the US when you study weekly seat capacity, although Continental Airlines offers a greater frequency with almost 500 weekly flights to 29 destinations in Mexico. In comparison American serves just 16 markets with a focus on Cancun and Mexico City, which together account for more than 55 per cent of its total capacity.

The American network is very Dallas/Fort Worth-centric, although some of its main routes are also served from Chicago O’Hare and Miami International.
