U.S. ULCC Allegiant Air will become the second airline to add Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to its network in early 2026, following Breeze Airways.

Both carriers have decided to start serving BUR following Avelo Airlines’ pullout from an airport it once considered a linchpin of its network. Allegiant will launch two routes from the southern California airport—located about 30 mi. from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)—including going head-to-head with Breeze on service to Provo, Utah.

From Feb. 12, 2026, Allegiant will open flights between BUR and Bellingham International Airport (BLI) in Washington state. On the same date, the leisure-focused carrier will begin flying between BUR and Provo Airport (PVU). While the airline did not reveal the number of frequencies on the two services, it generally operates routes 2X-weekly.

Breeze will follow with the March 11 launch of 5X-weekly flights between BUR and PVU.

Avelo in April 2021 started its first operations from BUR, viewing the airport as a key to its network development strategy. The airline saw BUR as an alternative to crowded LAX, believing it could draw passengers from small West Coast markets seeking less expensive flights to southern California.

At its peak in July 2021, the carrier operated from BUR to 11 destinations. In July 2025, Avelo still served eight destinations from the airport. But Burbank was unable to “deliver adequate financial returns amid a highly competitive backdrop,” Avelo conceded in July when announcing it would exit the airport by the end of this year.

However, Allegiant and Breeze appear to believe serving smaller markets from BUR could still be a winning strategy.

From Feb. 12, 2026, Las Vegas-based Allegiant will also start service between Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. That route will be abandoned by Spirit Airlines from Oct. 2. Spirit is exiting 11 markets following filing for Chapter 11 protection for a second time after emerging from a bankruptcy restructuring earlier this year.
