The Italian airline market is set for further consolidation after it was confirmed that national carrier Alitalia and Meridiana Fly were discussing a potential merger. The talks are at an exploratory stage but a statement from Meridiana Fly confirmed that “the company's future lies with national and international partnerships”. However, it added that at this stage “no partnership agreement exists and no decision has been taken”.

The two airlines have already played a role in the consolidation of the Italian market and have their largest presence at Rome Fiumicino, which Alitalia has developed as a major international hub, but also have significant operations from Milan Linate and Catania Fontanarossa.
