The latest news on airports globally, with updates on financing, infrastructure expansion and sustainability initiatives.
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) generated C$562.2 million ($401 million) in revenue in the third quarter, up 5.8% year over year. Net income for the period totaled C$138.6 million, up 13.3% over the October 2024 quarter. YYZ handled 13.1 million passengers in the third quarter, up 2.3% year over year. “This was largely driven by strong domestic growth that was partially offset by declines in the international sector,” the airport said. “The international sector was impacted by the ongoing decline in transborder [U.S.] travel.” YYZ CEO Deborah Flint said increasing domestic passengers “more than offset the decline in transborder U.S. travel [leading to] overall steady growth in passenger volume.”
Belgrade Airport (BEG) said it has started preparatory work for a terminal expansion project that will add 57,695 ft.². The project will add three new gates, growing the airport’s total gates to 36, and four new parking positions for narrowbody aircraft. BEG is managed by Vinci Airports under a long-term lease with the Serbian government. The airport will also add four new moving walkways within the terminal. BEG said the expansion project would last 13 months once it begins, but did not give a specific date for when construction will commence.
San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) cleared Waymo to use its autonomous automobile ride-hailing service to pick up arriving passengers at the airport. Waymo—a subsidiary of Google parent Alphabet—operates autonomous vehicles in select U.S. cities. SJC becomes the second airport in the world to allow Waymo service. The company currently operates its driverless electric cars at Phoenix International Airport, where it began rolling out service during overnight hours in 2022, and last year moved to offering 24/7 curbside drop-off and pickup at the Arizona airport. SJC’s approval for the public to use the service for pick-ups follows several weeks of fully autonomous testing at the airport with Waymo employees. SJC passengers can use the Waymo app to book a ride upon landing. “The vehicle will arrive at one of SJC's two ground transportation centers—in Terminal A or B,” the airport said. Waymo will take passengers to destinations within areas in the San Francisco Bay region where Waymo services are allowed.
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) reported revenue of DKK4.2 billion ($646 million) for the first nine months of 2025, up 9% over the first three quarters of 2024. The airport said the increase was partly driven by higher passenger numbers. CPH handled 24.5 million passengers during the nine-month period, 1.7 million more passengers than the January-October 2024 period. Transfer passengers rose 23% year over year to 2.6 million. The airport said the revenue increase “was partly offset by higher costs due to the higher activity level.” BEG expects to handle 32 million passengers for the full year, which would translate to an 8% revenue increase for 2025 over 2024.
Bournemouth Airport (BOH) in England opened a new arrivals and immigration hall, part of £17 million ($22.4 million) in upgrades at the airport in 2025. “The new facility doubles the number of [UK] Border Force passport control desks and triples the available floor space compared to the previous arrivals area, significantly improving the speed and comfort of the arrivals process for passengers,” BOH said. The airport is continuing work on an expanded baggage claim hall, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
