The latest news on airports globally, with updates on financing, infrastructure expansion and sustainability initiatives.

Melbourne Airport (MEL) in Australia said it has received the first round of community input regarding a noise plan for the airport’s third runway, slated to become operational in 2031. MEL said more than 570 online survey responses were received and 500 people participated in 24 community sessions and webinars. “Community members indicated preferences for breaks from aircraft noise at night and alternating runway use to provide regular days of respite, along with interest in learning how flightpaths are designed,” MEL said. "Aviation industry stakeholders showed support for emergency services continuing to receive priority airspace access and questioned how flightpath changes might affect general aviation operator access to local airspace and day-to-day operations.” MEL Executive General Manager for Major Capital Projects Scott Cooper said: ”The third runway is essential to ensure Melbourne Airport has the capacity it needs to serve [the state of] Victoria's growing population and the increased demand for both passenger and cargo services. By 2045, we expect more than 76 million [annual] passengers to pass through our terminals, which is more than twice the number today.” He added the third runway will give “airlines more flexibility, reducing delays and supporting thousands of new jobs.” MEL will make the draft noise plan public later this year for further community feedback before it is submitted to the Australian government and local authorities for approval.

Moses Wekesa became CEO of the Kenya Airports Authority, which runs nine airports in Kenya, including Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). He replaces Mohamud Gedi. Wekesa previously was the business development director for the Kenya Electricity Generating Company.

Norfolk International Airport (ORF) in Virginia opened three new gates as part of an extension of Concourse A. The new gates follow the March opening of an upgraded Customs and Border Protection facility at the airport. The concourse extension spans 19,000 ft.2 over two levels. American Airlines is using the three new gates. “Breeze Airways will relocate into Concourse A later this spring to help balance airline operations and passenger flow within ORF,” the airport noted.

Alesund Airport (AES) in Norway has started renovating its check-in and bag-drop area. The work is expected to be completed by June 1. “The check-in area will receive new check-in desks and new technical systems, among other things,” AES said. “The goal is more modern and functional solutions for both travelers and employees. We are doing this to equip the airport for many years to come.”

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) increased the daily rate for automobile parking in its economy lots from $12 to $14. “This change reflects the airport's response to increasing passenger traffic and continued demand for convenient on-airport parking options,” AUS said. “The updated rate is part of ongoing efforts to support airport operations and improvements.”
