RIO DE JANEIRO—Next year’s IATA AGM will be held in Xiamen, China, and will be hosted by Xiamen Airlines.

The venue and date—May 30-June 1, 2027—were announced June 7 at this year’s AGM, which is being held in Rio de Janeiro and hosted by LATAM. The 2027 event will be the 83rd IATA AGM.

“Hosting the AGM in China will allow the leaders of the global aviation industry to witness first-hand the impressive development of the China market,” said IATA director general Willie Walsh, for whom the Rio AGM is his last as the association’s leader. He is leaving later this summer to become CEO at Indian airline IndiGo, which is an IATA member.

Next year’s event will be the third AGM to be held in China. Previous hosts were Shanghai in 2002 and Beijing in 2012.

IATA also announced on June 7 that Pegasus Airlines Chair Mehmet Tevfik Nane will succeed LATAM Airlines Group CEO Roberto Alvo as IATA Chair from June 2027. Alvo took up his IATA role June 7 at the conclusion of the Rio event, receiving the baton from International Airlines Group (IAG) CEO Luis Gallego, who will continue to serve on the board.

“Aviation is at a defining moment, with an increasingly important role in connecting people, enabling trade, and supporting economic development around the world. Chairing the IATA board of directors at this time is a responsibility I take with great commitment. As we navigate a more complex environment, our industry must continue working together to strengthen safety, improve efficiency, advance sustainability, and unlock the benefits of connectivity for more people and communities,” Alvo said.

No statement was made about who will succeed Walsh as IATA director general.
