Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with aviation technology group SITA to co-develop innovative solutions aimed at improving airline operations and enhancing passenger services to meet Africa’s increasing travel demand.
The collaboration will bring together startups, technology providers, business accelerators and industry partners to tackle key challenges and create tailored solutions for the airline.
“Ethiopia is realizing its ambition to become a sophisticated, dynamic destination for investment, trade, and tourism,” Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew said. “Ethiopian Airlines plays a central role in making that vision a reality.”
“Creating the best first and last impressions for business and leisure travelers is crucial, and this partnership puts us in the best position to deliver exceptional experiences while taking full advantage of the opportunities ahead,” Tasew added.
Selim Bouri, SITA’s president for the Middle East and Africa, says that Africa’s aviation sector is undergoing a period of unprecedented growth, with passenger expectations rising in line with global advances in digital technology.
“Hubs like Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport need to provide a frictionless passenger journey so airlines can optimize flight schedules and deliver smooth, memorable trips,” Bouri says.
“This collaboration between Ethiopian Airlines and SITA is about driving the innovation needed to meet these demands and help shape the future of African aviation.”
The memorandum of understanding with SITA supports Ethiopian Airlines’ “Vision 2035” plan, the carrier says, which targets 65 million passengers annually compared to 19 million in 2024, plus 3 million tons of cargo.
The airline has also announced a new international airport project in Bishoftu, 28 mi. southeast of Addis Ababa.
The mega airport will serve as the future hub for all international passenger and cargo traffic, complementing Bole International Airport, which will retain its domestic operations.
