Avelo Airlines To Add Washington Dulles To Network With Connecticut Service

U.S. carrier Avelo Airlines will add Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to its network over the summer, becoming the 43rd airline to serve the airport, a hub for United Airlines.
 
From July 12, Avelo will open service between IAD and Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) in southern Connecticut. The route, which will be operated 2X-weekly with a Boeing 737NG, will be exclusive to the airline.
 
Avelo currently operates flights from HVN to Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), located about 60 mi. from IAD.
 
HVN sits roughly 60 mi. south of Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport (BDL), which serves Hartford, and 80 mi. northeast of New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports. Avelo began HVN service in November 2021, with six routes to Florida destinations. Avelo’s expansion at the airport continues this month with four more routes being added, most notably 4X-weekly flights to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) that kicked off on May 2.
 
The four new routes starting this month bring to 21 the number of airports being served by Avelo from HVN, its original U.S. East Coast base. With the additions of ATL—Delta Air Lines' base hub and the world's busiest passenger airport—and IAD, Avelo will connect HVN to two major East Coast international hubs.
 
Though most of Avelo’s routes from HVN are to small and mid-sized markets, it also serves Orlando International Airport, in Florida, and Chicago Midway from Tweed-New Haven.
 
“This exclusive nonstop service [between HVN and IAD] makes exploring the abundance of experiences our nation’s capital has to offer a fast and seamless journey for Connecticut visitors,” Avelo CEO Andrew Levy said in a statement.
 
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont added: “Avelo’s continued growth in Connecticut is helping to strengthen connectivity for companies that are already here and will stimulate further regional development.”
