FARNBOROUGH, England—Lessor AerCap has placed an additional order for 15 Boeing 787-9s.
The deal, announced here at the Farnborough Airshow, allows the company to switch to the larger 787-10, should demand trends call for it.
AerCap’s previous 787 commitments had been for 125 787s, with only nine remaining to be delivered, making it the largest owner of 787s with very limited availability of additional aircraft. Lessors in general have become more interested in widebody leasing given the strong demand in the market. AerCap’s closest competitor, SMBC Aviation Capital, has access to a large orderbook that includes widebodies through its acquisition of Air Lease Corporation.
The additional 15 787s will be powered by GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engines. The companies did not disclose details of the planned delivery schedule. Deliveries from previous orders extend through the third quarter of 2028.
“As demand for modern, fuel-efficient widebody airplanes continues to grow, this transaction enables us to provide our customers with greater access to one of the industry's most versatile and sought-after airplane families,” AerCap CEO Aengus Kelly said. “The 787 has consistently demonstrated strong operating economics and exceptional performance across a wide range of route networks.”
AerCap has a broad existing customer base for its 787 fleet. The largest operators include Virgin Atlantic, Thai Airways, LATAM Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, EgyptAir and Air Europa, according to Aviation Week’s Fleet Discovery database.
