FARNBOROUGH—Brazilian airframer Embraer has “completely shelved” its former ambitions of developing a new turboprop, which were first mooted around 2019.
Previously, Embraer was considering new 70- and 90-seat turboprops with aft-mounted forward-facing engines. This formed part of its sustainability strategy, separate from its Energia hybrid family.
At least year’s Paris Air Show, Embraer Commercial Aircraft CEO Arjan Meijer said the turboprop revival was “on ice.” Now the project has been ruled out.
“We said we put it in the fridge. Then we said we put it in the freezer. But I think it's fair to say, we've completely shelved that project,” Meijer said, responding to an ATW question at the Farnborough Airshow.
Embraer has also revised the scope of its market outlook. Previously this included aircraft up to 150 seats, including turboprops. Now the outlook is solely focused on jets.
“We actually believe that a lot of the turboprop markets can be flown with the jets that we have,” Meijer said. “So, no turboprop for Embraer.”
