Airbus has started construction on an extension of its Belfast wing facility—a move it said should help support the ramp-up of production of its A220 program to 13 aircraft per month by 2028.

The manufacturer said construction had started on the 6,221-m2 extension, which is part of a wider investment plan at the site in Northern Ireland.

“Enhancing our wing facilities is a direct investment in the future of A220 wing production here in Belfast, building the capacity required to meet the growing demand for this aircraft,” said Anthony Rouse, head of Airbus Belfast plant and site.

The extension is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028 and will expand the facility’s wing manufacturing footprint and advanced composite capabilities.

It will house a third autoclave alongside specialized wing tooling and cranage.

Alongside the extension, Airbus said it would continue to modernize site infrastructure with the introduction of a new security gate entrance, high-voltage electrical substations, a new office block, expanded 650-space car park and new IT systems.

“This commitment is also reflected in our ongoing skills development, including bringing onboard 40 new apprentices who will start in September this year,” Rouse said.

Belfast is the only Airbus site worldwide manufacturing A220 wings.

Airbus delivered 351 commercial aircraft in the first half of 2026, including 44 A220s.
