Hobart Airport has officially opened its upgraded runway, allowing the Australian hub to accommodate widebody aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

Construction has commenced on the runway at Hobart International Airport (HBA), set to enable to nonstop flights from Tasmania to Asia.

As well as consolidating flights, Air New Zealand will pause two international connections from April: service from Auckland to Seoul and to Hobart, Australia.

The airline is dropping nine domestic routes and one international service.

The flights from Hobart are the latest domestic routes to be added to the airline’s network.

The airline is restoring Tasmania to its network after a 23-year absence. The route comes as New Zealand’s government has announced the extension of an air connectivity scheme.
