More routes are returning to Delta Air Lines’ long-haul network during the upcoming winter and summer seasons, but some destinations like Mumbai and Osaka are not currently scheduled to resume.
American Airlines and JetBlue are forming a partnership that is designed to boost each other’s networks in the ultra-competitive US Northeast and pave the way for new and expanded routes from New York and Boston.
Delta Air Lines will suspend flights to 11 US markets from next month as it shrinks its route network to match demand. Separately, the carrier has also formally applied for the US Transportation Department to authorize its codeshare deal with LATAM Airlines Group.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines are set to resume scheduled passenger service between the US and China from next month for the first time since early February.
Aeromexico is the latest addition to the airport’s roster of air carriers, with flights to Mexico City beginning April 1, 2017 and flights to Monterrey starting May 1, 2017, coinciding with the busy summer travel season. In January 2017, Southwest Airlines resumed its weekend service to Orlando. Additionally, Spirit Airlines will add service to Oakland and Seattle this spring, while United Airlines will begin direct flights to and from San Francisco this summer.
Network growth across both its domestic and international markets has helped boost traffic at Detroit Metropolitan Airport during the first half of this year. Latest data from the airport operator shows an additional 817,000 passengers were handled over the first six months of the year versus the same period in 2015, a rise of 5.1 percent.
Delta and Virgin Atlantic’s joint venture is based around offering customers more options and a seamless experience between the US and the UK. The airlines are continuously evaluating their joint Transatlantic network to match the right aircraft to the right destinations and the summer 2017 network growth and route switches are a clear example of this.
The carrier is reducing its capacity into Brazil this winter through route switches, frequency reductions and aircraft changes in preparation for what its vice-president of Latin America, Mexico and Caribbean, Nicolas Ferri describes as a “long cycle” economic slowdown in the country, in an interview posted on the airline’s website.
US low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines is to introduce a new link between Orlando and Detroit in the final quarter of this year, its fourth route to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport adding to its existing links from Denver, Trenton and Washington. The daily flight to Orlando International Airport will commence from November 18, 2015 and will be operated using an Airbus A320.
UK carrier Virgin Atlantic Airways is to suspend flights to Cape Town, Mumbai, Tokyo and Vancouver as it instead looks to strengthen its transatlantic partnership with shareholder Delta Air Lines. The latest network changes are part of an ongoing network review and business recovery plan to return the carrier to long-term profitability.
Already serving both Washington Reagan National and Baltimore Washington International airports, the carrier will launch 68 weekly flights to 14 destinations from Dulles International Airport from August this year.
