Nine years after first flight and 16 years after it was first conceived, the C-17 Globemaster III heavy transport has been doing yeoman service for the U.S. Air Force. And its high maintainability has been a lead contributor to its reliability. As USAF has expanded its fleet to 58 and its total orderbook to 120 by 2005, it has begun upgrading the fleet and further fine-tuning its maintenance practices.

Messier Services will work with Chile's Enaer on maintenance of both landing systems and hydraulics, and military and civil aircraft in South America. Messier Services America in Sterling, Va., will support Enaer for all civil operations, providing specific expertise in Airbus hydraulics. French-based Messier Services will provide comprehensive support for military aircraft, primarily those built by Dassault Aviation.

Bombardier Aerospace added two facilities to its network of Bombardier Global Express ultra-long range business jet service centers. Lufthansa Bombardier Aviation Services, Berlin Schonefeld Airport, received its JAR 145 operating certificate; and Innotech Execaire Aviation Group, Montreal, received authorized service facility status from Bombardier. Also, Bombardier selected BFGoodrich Aerospace, Everett, Wash., as an interior and avionics completion center for the Global Express.

Martin-Baker America will open an ejection seat manufacturing facility in Johnstown, Pa., in November, which will focus on the planned modification on more than 1,000 Navy Aircrew Common Ejection Seats, assembly of seats for the T-38 Talon trainer and JSF, as well as maintenance and overhaul work and production of spare parts.

Lufthansa Technik has delivered the first of three outfitted Boeing Business Jets to Swiss carrier PrivatAir. LHT was also hired on to provide its Total Technical Support package for the three PrivatAir BBJs. Also, Lufthansa Technik will repaint Crossair's entire fleet of about 70 aircraft including Saab 340s and 2000s; Embraer 145s, Avro RJ85/100s and Boeing-Douglas MD-80s under a two-year Crossair livery update.

Tower Aviation Services and Advanced Turbine Technologies was renamed Alameda Aerospace and relocated to facilities at the former Alameda Naval Air Station in the San Francisco Bay area. Parent company Vector Aerospace purchased the organization last July. Alameda Aerospace will continue to repair, overhaul and certify aircraft APUs and components.

FAA issued two significant BAe 146/Avro RJ rules in March -- one calling for checks on bolts that attach the engine pylon to the wing, and one mandating work on the jets' engines. FAA mandated a pair of British Aerospace/BAE Systems service bulletins calling for work on Lycoming ALF502 and LF507 No. 4 and No. 5 bearing systems hardware, including a modified fourth turbine rotor disk. The rule is effective April 27. Estimated cost for the work is $31,200 per engine, or $124,800 per aircraft.

SR Technics and Cathay Pacific are in ``advanced discussions'' with South African Airways about establishing an MRO facility in Johannesburg, which would serve primarily South African Airways. Start of operation is scheduled for year-end.

It's the kind of story guaranteed to get any airline maintenance executive's attention. Last year, Mexico's respected Reforma newspaper reported that the general secretary of the Mexican Pilots Union (ASPA) contended almost a third of the aircraft operated by some Mexican carriers were ``junk.''

MTU ranks fifth In the global engine overhaul market, trailing the major OEMs and Lufthansa Technik. A subsidiary of German aerospace giant DaimlerChrysler Aerospace (DASA), MTU's civil engine overhaul business has quadrupled from about $100 million in 1988 to about $400 million per year, and is set to quadruple again by 2010.

Howmet International purchased the remaining 19% share of Komatsu-Howmet, Ltd., from joint venture partner Komatsu, Ltd. With sole ownership, Howmet is changing the Japan-based subsidiary's name to Howmet Japan Ltd.

Cathay Pacific Airways will be launch customer for Primex Technologies' EMPORT system on its fleet of 56 aircraft. EMPORT allows aircraft passengers to use their laptop computers to access e-mail in-flight and also includes an on-board Intranet. Installation will begin in 2001.

Xiamen Sundstrand Qinling Aerospace, a joint venture between Hamilton Sundstrand and China's Shaanxi Qinling Aeroelectric, has opened its 26,000-sq. ft. facility in the Aviation City Industrial Complex in Xiamen. The JV will provide airlines in China with overhaul and repair services for Hamilton Sundstrand electric power systems.

General Electric and United Technologies have signed an MoU for a new military helicopter engine program that will compete for the U.S. Army's Common Engine Program, which is envisioned to be used in growth applications of the Black Hawk and Seahawk helicopters. The competition is expected to begin by FY2001.

With e-commerce websites popping up like dandelions all over the wired world, people are becoming accustomed to point-and-click shopping.
