Airbus and Air Canada joined forces in June to perform a flight from Canada to Mexico that cut CO2 emissions by more than 40% compared to a regular flight. The Airbus A319 flew from Toronto to Mexico City and used biofuels as well as streamlined air traffic management procedures to achieve the emissions savings. Air Canada flight AC991was the second leg of a series of four biofuel flights taking ICAO Secretary General Raymond Benjamin to Rio de Janeiro for the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

IATA DG and CEO Tony Tyler has issued strong criticism of the European Commission’s unmoving stance on the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) carbon tax and called on Europe to “get on with finding a global solution.” In a hard-hitting keynote speech in Beijing at the IATA 2012 annual meeting and summit, Tyler said EU ETS stood in the way of achieving targets reduce emissions and to setting a comprehensive solution on aviation emissions negotiated via ICAO.

HP Enterprise Services unveiled HP Converged Cloud Services for Airlines, which it describes as the airline industry’s first hybrid delivery approach to “an intelligent airline cloud.” Brian Cook, vice president and general manager of HP Enterprise Services’ Transportation Industry Group, said HP’s goal is to “move toward exposing more services as cloud-based services to help airlines get additional revenue into the pipeline and to take costs out of their infrastructure.”
