The African market remains one of the most challenging in the global airline industry, with an EBIT margin of around just 0.7% anticipated for African carriers collectively this year. That would at least mark a small profit, relative to the previous year’s loss, but it is fragile and there are wide differences in the success of individual airlines.

Alitalia’s route network plans show the Italian carrier being pulled into orbit around the fast-growing, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, following the closing of a long-awaited major investment deal.
