Now in its 15th year, Routes Asia brings together airlines, airports, tourism authorities and governments to plan new flights and increase existing services. Over 930 route development professionals from 110 airlines, 170 airports and 20 tourism authorities are expected to attend this year’s event at Okinawa Convention Centre.
Over the past three years Okinawa’s Naha Airport has more than trebled its international flight capacity, and it hopes that hosting next year’s Routes Asia will help attract additional foreign air links into the southernmost prefecture of Japan.
Today (Tuesday, 8 March) the Routes Asia route development forum was officially handed over from Manila in the Philippines to Okinawa in Japan – the host destination for 2017.
Okinawa Prefecture is located roughly halfway between Japan and East Asia with flight times between the main islands of Japan and various Asian cities being within four hours. Okinawa, surrounded by crystal clear sea and beautiful natural landscapes, is Japan’s subtropical landscape it is at the crossroads of Asian nations and has developed its own unique culture, integrating aspects of Chinese, Japanese and Southeast Asian cultures with its own indigenous spirit.
