Uvex introduced a new lens assortment for its FitLogic safety eyewear. The new assortment includes reading magnifiers, which are ideal for fine detail work, reading and inspection. Individual bifocal readers are molded onto a clear FitLogic lens and are available in +1.5, +2.0 and +2.5 diopter strengths. The unique, floating lens design provides ventilation to minimize fogging. The wrap-around lens features extra cheek and side coverage and is made of optically perfected polycarbonate to block 99.9% of UV rays. The lenses are hard-coated to prevent scratching.

Rolls-Royce entered into a long-term TotalCare maintenance agreement with Northwest Airlines on installed and spare Trent 1000 engines for 18 Boeing 787 aircraft recently ordered by the airline. The contract includes an option for as many as 18 additional aircraft. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in August 2008. Rolls-Royce will also support Trent 1000 engines selected by LOT Polish Airlines to power its seven Boeing 787 aircraft on order. The maintenance contract is for 15 years.

Lufthansa Technik Shenzehn has acquired the ability to service airframe-related components for the thrust reversers on CFM56-3-powered Boeing 737s and for those on the 747 and Airbus A300, and the CF8-80-powered MD-11. LTS also has acquired the capability to do the inlet cowls on the V2500 engines that power the A320 family. LTS is a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik, Shenzhen Investment Holding Corp. and Beijing Kailan Aviation Technology Co.

The worldwide commercial transport fleet is growing, but the book value of the aftermarket parts held per aircraft is shrinking, which means the MRO supply chain is getting more efficient. That's one of the conclusions that can be drawn from a recently completed survey of the commercial transport MRO supply chain. The survey was conducted by AeroStrategy in conjunction with Overhaul & Maintenance and Aviation Week Conferences & Exhibitions.

Hamilton Aerospace Technologies signed two heavy maintenance contracts for six MD-83 aircraft with Jets MD Lease and MD Leasego. Combined, the contracts are worth $2 million.

Alaska Airlines late this fall will supercharge its maintenance human factors analysis efforts by digging deeper into the human aspects of error reports filed by employees. A new Human Factors (HF) group, launched earlier this year with 30 people from all facets of the company, including labor, will begin reviewing the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) reports with an eye toward program and policy issues that span boundaries between various groups.

Canada-based Cascade Aerospace and Art Schmidt, the former head of technical services for Boulioun Aviation Services, have formed a new company to offer commercial and technical services to aircraft lessors, owners, operators, financiers and manufacturers. New company is called Cascade Aircraft Solutions Inc.

FAA has been negotiating airworthiness bilaterals since the 1930s. Today, the agency has some form of airworthiness bilateral with 30 countries (see chart, p. 54). For years, FAA and its foreign counterparts negotiated bilateral airworthiness agreements (BAAs). These took the form of single documents that had both the boilerplate, high-level language summarizing the deal and the technical details that, from the aviation industry's perspective at least, contained each accord's most important parts.

The TUI Group awarded SR Technics Ireland a five-year contract to repair and overhaul APUs for its seven airlines: Hapagfly, Hapag Lloyd Express, Thomsonfly, Britannia, Corsair, Jetair and Arkefly.

U.S. Congress was notified in July of U.S. government requirements for contractors to supply logistics support services and equipment for Bahrain's 18/4 Lockheed Martin F-16C/Ds, their ALR-69 radar warning receivers, ALQ-131 ECM pods, radar systems, and GE F110 engines. Estimated cost with all options is $150 million. Principal contractors will be GE Aircraft Engines and Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems.

GKN Aerospace Chem-tronics was awarded a contract to supply titanium inlet cases for TF33 engines that equip U.S. Air Force B-52s and KC-135E aircraft. The contract, which potentially is worth $100 million, was awarded by engine OEM Pratt & Whitney.
