Look for tour operators to assume a greater role in specifying, leasing and purchasing new transport aircraft as they integrate vertically and try to control more closely their capacity, flight schedules, quality and seat-mile costs. Zurich-based Hotelplan, the second-largest Swiss tour operator, recently leased two Boeing 757-200s through the International Lease Finance Corp. A subsidiary of SAirGroup, Balair, is contracted to operate them. Hotelplan flies holiday travelers to resorts in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf areas.
DaimlerChrysler Aerospace Airbus late next year will begin assembling the 107-seat A318 twinjet, further strengthening Germany's role and visibility in Airbus Industrie's robust growth. DASA Airbus, the German company's biggest business unit, now has final assembly responsibility for the 185-seat A321 and 124-seat A319 and produces major components and airframe subassemblies for the European consortium's entire product range.
Thai Airways International is to further rationalize its mixed fleet by cutting back to six basic types from the current 10, with MD-11s and ATR72s the first to be sold. The U.S. Army is initiating a competition for a target to exercise its Patriot PAC-3 ballistic missile defense system. The Tactical Ballistic Missile Training Target is intended to provide Patriot units with a live-fire training capability. Meanwhile, the service's Space and Missile Defense Command has demonstrated the Orbital/Suborbital (OSP) target launch vehicle designed for the national missile defense system. The target includes a shroud on a three-stage Minuteman II booster.

The 16M SRAM MCM packages four 4M memory die using both sides of the substrate in a 68-lead ceramic flatpack. This technique increases packaging density, saving space and weight, and provides high-speed (25ns) access. The product is available for either 3.3.-or 5-volt power supply options. This MCM packaging is advantageous for satellite applications because it reduces board space requirements and component count.
