SpaceX has requested a special election in Texas to incorporate the privately owned Starbase community near Brownsville that serves as a manufacturing complex, test facility and spaceport for the company’s Starship-Super Heavy program.

“To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley,” the base general manager, Kathy Lueders, wrote in a letter to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, the Associated Press reported Dec. 12.

“Our legal and elections administration will review the petition, see whether or not it complied with all of the statutory requirements and then we’ll go from there,” Treviño told the wire service.

Incorporating Starbase could help SpaceX in multiple ways, including the potential for the municipality to exercise the right of eminent domain, which allows a government to take private property for public use without an owner’s consent if fair compensation is provided.
