Engine MRO: Where’s The New Capability?

North America

  • MTU Maintenance Dallas introduced a new 100,000-lb.-thrust test cell at the end of 2023 after relocating to Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport.
  • Delta TechOps has begun industrializing CFM International Leap engine capability in Atlanta.
  • Engine aftermarket services provider Aero Care has opened a new headquarters in Miami that will house its stock of CFM56 and V2500 engine parts.
  • StandardAero has introduced CFM56-7B engine test services at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and is following up with planned Leap 1A/1B maintenance rollouts in 2024.
  • General Electric has dissolved and become the pure-play GE Aerospace, which plans to invest $450 million in new and upgraded test cells, inspection equipment, machines and buildings in the U.S.
  • ITP Aero has acquired the majority of BP Aero.

Latin America

  • Partnerships between Latin American MROs and engine OEMs are seen as a solution to remedying the region’s lack of engine maintenance capability.

Europe

  • AFI KLM E&M opened a new narrowbody and widebody engine shop at Paris Orly Airport in September.
  • Lufthansa Technik is looking to invest in more engine capacity and is targeting growth in the Leap 1A/1B engine segments.
  • N3 Engine Overhaul Services will invest €150 million ($161.8 million) to ramp up capacity for Rolls-Royce Trent engine maintenance.
  • Rolls-Royce will invest in new assembly, testing and shop visit capacity at sites in Germany and the UK.
  • SR Technics is reactivating its test cell in Zurich for CFM56-5B/7B, newer Pratt & Whitney PW1100-JM and eventually Leap 1A/1B engines.
  • TAP Maintenance & Engineering is investing to expand CFM Leap 1A engine MRO capabilities in the first half of 2024.
  • GE Aerospace plans to invest $70 million in new and upgraded test cells, tooling and machines at manufacturing facilities in the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Romania and the UK.

India

  • Safran plans to complete a Leap engine overhaul facility in Hyderabad by 2025.

China

  • Air China and Rolls-Royce have broken ground in Beijing on their planned Trent engine joint venture set for 2026, servicing Trent 700, 1000 and XWB-84 engines.
  • MTU Maintenance Zhuhai planned to open a second location in Jinwan by the end of the first quarter of 2024, with full shop visit capability by the fourth quarter.

Middle East

  • Sanad unveiled the region’s first Leap 1A/1B engine maintenance center in Abu Dhabi in late 2023.
  • Saudia Technic is set to construct an engine test cell for narrowbody and widebody engines at its new MRO Village in Jeddah.

Asia-Pacific

  • Korean Air has begun construction of an engine maintenance facility in Unbuk near Incheon International Airport.
  • Pratt & Whitney will expand geared turbofan (GTF) capacity this year at its Eagle Services Asia subsidiary in Singapore by two-thirds, while also ramping up GTF repair industrialization there.
  • ST Engineering introduced Leap 1B test capability in late 2023, with full restoration services expected by the first quarter of 2025. Leap 1A test capability is planned for the first quarter of 2024, with full shop visit capability by the fourth quarter.
