The Indian government and domestic MRO stakeholders have begun planning and development of MRO hubs in various pockets of the country, including a development at the twin airport project in Noida.
The Government of Uttar Pradesh in North India plans to develop an MRO hub near Noida International Airport, which is currently under construction and located near the city of Jewa. As a next step, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), which handles infrastructure near the airport, is preparing to issue a global tender for an MRO facility, as part of the airport's second phase expansion.
The authorities have also planned to set up various aviation industrial units along with a training institution to support the MRO facility.
As construction of the airport enters its second phase of development, YEIDA will float a global tender for development of an MRO facility toward the end of this month. YEIDA officials have already acquired the land for a dedicated MRO facility and a dedicated runway.
YEIDA says it has so far acquired 814 hectares, or 60%, of the 1,365 hectares allocated for the project, which will be used for the MRO facility and a dedicated runway. It says it plans to acquire the remainder of land for the second phase of the airport project. YEIDA expects the land alllotment process to begin by the end of 2023.
To promote the upcoming MRO services, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has also announced an MRO policy offering a subsidy of 12 crore Indian Rupees (approximately $1.6 million) to eligible companies along with an exemption in goods and services tax and other taxes for about a decade. The policy also offers various land-related subsidies to attract more local and foreign MROs to the state.
The airport's phase one development is likely to become operational by Sept. 29, 2024. The first phase will commence with two runways, and subsequent phases will see the addition of three more runways. A dedicated runway for the MRO facility, planned for phase two, will bring the total number of runways to six. The airport is expected to begin operations toward the end of 2024.
Apart from Uttar Pradesh, the governments of various South Indian states including Karnataka, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu, have announced specific MRO policies and upped their efforts to develop MRO hubs in city locations.
