Asia-Pacific Engine Specialists

James Pozzi September 19, 2018

GE Aviation Services

GE Aviation

The U.S. engine giant's presence in Asia-Pacific is widespread. In Malaysia, it operates an engine shop focusing on CFM56 variants. In South Korea at an on-wing support operation, it services the majority of engine types.

Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce

Another big name engine OEM with a strong presence in the region is Rolls-Royce. Its customer service center in Singapore's Seletar district provides services on multiple engine types, including the Trent family and the RB211.

Pratt & Whitney Eagle Services Asia

Pratt's site in Singapore specializes in GE90 repairs and is also a center of excellence for the PW4000 engine. Earlier this year, the facility also became the first in the Asia-Pacific region to hold full MRO capabilities on the GP7200 engine.

GMF AeroAsia Sees Uptick In MRO Demand

GMF AeroAsia
While MRO in China has gradually recovered, the past few months have made it difficult for non-Chinese airlines to gain access to the country. This has led to a surge in demand for maintenance providers in neighboring countries such as GMF AeroAsia of Indonesia.

Korean Air Maintenance & Engineering

Korean Air Maintenance & Engineering, affiliated with Korean Air, provides engine services on variants of the CFM56, GE90 and PW4000. The MRO does a mix of Korean Air's fleet and third-party work, which it is looking to grow. In March 2018, Soo-Keun Lee, Korean Air’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, told Inside MRO: "We strive to balance repair capabilities between legacy and new engines. To plan for more potential growth, we are in the process of developing full capability for the GE90 engine, targeting completion by mid-2019."

Lufthansa Technik Philippines

Lufthansa Technik Philippines

The Lufthansa Technik Philippines operation in Manila holds CFM56, CF6 and V2500 repair capabilities in its engine portfolio. One year ago, Thomas Rueckert, vice president of base maintenance services at Lufthansa Technik, said he saw modifications work as being a particular sweet spot for aftermarket providers such as Lufthansa Technik Philippines. “In addition to maintenance checks, there will also be additions to various structural modifications and extensive refurbishments of the complete aircraft cabin,” he said.

Thai Technical

Thai Technical

Thai Technical, the maintenance division of Thai Airways, holds repair specialisms for the CF6 and Trent 700 and 800 engine types. Thai is plotting the expansion of its Rolls repairs in Asia-Pacific. Earlier this year, it entered into talks with Rolls-Royce to enter the OEM's CareNetwork. By 2019, it is hoped that Thai could be open for business as an authorized maintenance center.

Hong Kong Aero Engine Services (HAESL)

HAESL

Hong Kong Aero Engine Services, operating under the acronym of HAESL, focuses on Rolls-Royce engines such as the Trent 500, 700, 800, XWB and the RB211.

ST Engineering Bolsters Engine Repair Offerings

ST Aerospace
Earlier in the year, ST Engineering announced its aerospace arm signed an agreement with CFM International to provide MRO support for its LEAP-1B engine. Through the agreement, ST Engineering will have the rights to the use technical data to perform MRO work on the LEAP-1B engine.
