The region’s engine aftermarket will account for 42% of overall MRO spend in 2022, dwarfing the share of line maintenance (23%) and component maintenance (21%).

This year, engine MRO spend in North America is estimated to reach $21.6 billion. Neighbouring Canada is expected to generate $1.8 billion in 2022.

Unsurprisingly, the U.S. accounts for the lion’s share of MRO spend with $18.9 billion forecast for this year.

In 2022, Aviation Week estimates approximately 18,919 engines will be in-service across the North America region.

The CFM56 has the largest volume of in-service engines in North America, standing at around 5,000 units according to Aviation Week’s Fleet & MRO Forecast data. In the widebody segment, the CF6 has the highest share with around 3,600 in-service engines.

American Airlines operates the largest volume of engines, according to Aviation Week data. It lists the Dallas-based airline as operating 1764 engines in 2022. United, Southwest and Delta are the next largest operators.

Narrowbody aircraft and engine demand for domestic routes was one of the key drivers of North America’s recovery last year. This will be reflected in the number of CFM International LEAP-1B engine deliveries into the market this year. Aviation Week data estimates 312 deliveries of the engine that powers the Boeing 737 Max.

A potential retirement wave following COVID-19 has been mooted, but data suggests this is more likely to occur in the mid-2020s rather than in the next 1-2 years. This year, approximately 723 engines are expected to leave active service. The largest number of widebody retirements are the CF6 and the CF34.
