Greece has signed a purchase agreement to cover the previously disclosed plan to buy three Embraer KC-390 transport aircraft and provide the Hellenic Air Force its first dedicated air-to-air refueling capability.
Greece is buying the aircraft through Portugal in a deal signed Nov. 2, the Portuguese defense ministry said. The deal is valued at around €590 million ($661 million), including support and training activities.
The ministry said the first aircraft is due for delivery in 2027, with the other two coming in 2029 and 2031. The aircraft will be delivered in their NATO standard.
Embraer, in a statement, said Athens has also taken options for three more of the aircraft.
In 2025, Portugal took an option for 10 more KC-390s after exercising an option for a sixth aircraft, with an eye on placing some with partner countries.
Portugal will provide logistics support and training at its Beja air base that it plans to use as a KC-390 training center.
Greece is the seventh European KC-390 customer, Embraer notes, joining Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden. Slovakia and others have also expressed interest in the aircraft.
