The European Union (EU) has launched a call for participation in the EU-Ukraine Drone Alliance aimed at fostering development of uncrewed aerial systems and ways to defend against them.

The call launched May 5 is supposed to select the founding members of the alliance, according to the European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm. It can include larger firms or small and medium-sized enterprises, it said.

The participants need to be controlled within the EU or Ukraine, or some related locations. Submissions are due May 25, with the selection due in June.

“The Drone Alliance aims to connect industrial actors to learn from each other, in particular from Ukraine’s adaptation in a full-scale war situation and build together drone and counter-drone capabilities,” the EU said.

As a near-term step, the project aims to facilitate defense industrial cooperation and access to testing facilities, including in Ukraine. During this year and next, the EU wants to help facilitate ways to accelerate production, with longer-term plans to develop larger efforts around building up drone and counter-drone capabilities. The EU wants to augment member state efforts already taking place in this area.
