From The Archives: Wooden Weapons
The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s Oct. 19, 1970, issue featured the Yugoslav Soko Jastreb (Hawk) jet fighter, which was being developed as a photo-reconnaissance aircraft in tandem with its role as a ground attack fighter.
Painted wooden mockups of the weapons available to users were on show at the Society of British Aerospace Companies display at Farnborough, England.
A typical operational mix for photo-recon missions included 450 kg (990 lb.) of fuel in tip tanks, 340 kg of fuel in optional pylon tanks, one photo-recon pod and four HVAR 5-in. rockets.
