From the Archives: Super Cobra Flies - 25 Years Ago In Aviation Week
The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s April 23, 2001, issue featured the first U.S. Marine Corps AH-1Z Super Cobra in flight near Arlington, Texas.
Capable of flying faster and farther while carrying a heavier payload than its predecessor, AH-1W, the new Super Cobra was tentatively scheduled to begin operations with Marine helicopter attack squadrons in 2006, but it was not actually declared combat-ready until 2010, by which time it was known as the Viper.
