The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s Dec. 28, 1970, issue featured a Lockheed Poseidon fleet ballistic missile rising from the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Kennedy during a test launch by the submarine U.S.S. Daniel Boone. It was the fourth Poseidon launch from a submerged submarine. The U.S. Navy’s second nuclear submarine-launched ballistic missile, the two-stage, solid-fuel Poseidon, replaced the Polaris in 1972, and was followed by the Trident 1 in 1979.
