From The Archives: 2nd Airitalia-Embraer-Arrmacchi AMX Prototype In Flight Test

May 20 1985

The cover of Aviation Week & Space Technology’s May 20, 1985, issue featured a prototype of the joint Italian/Brazilian Aeritalia-Embraer-Aermacchi AMX light attack fighter in flight testing near Turin in northern Italy.

The second and third prototypes had recently entered the flight test program, following the destruction of the first prototype in a crash the previous year that claimed the life of the pilot (AW&ST June 11, 1984, p. 52).

Deliveries of production aircraft to Italy began in 1988, and the service finally formally retired the aircraft in 2024. (Aeritalia photo by Gianni Pasqua).
