Textron Teams With Merlin For Autonomous SkyCourier Concept

A Textron/Merlin team announced a concept for an autonomous version of the cargo-hauling Cessna SkyCourier to meet the military’s need for an airlifter fleet that can operate in contested airspace.
 
The unveiling of the SkyCourier UX on the opening day of the Air, Space & Cyber Conference on Sept. 14 introduces a candidate for the U.S. Air Force’s Last Tactical Leg logistics concept.
 
The SkyCourier UX would come modified with a Merlin Pilot, a software-enabled control system that has recorded hundreds of flights on other Textron aircraft, such as Cessna Caravans and Beechcraft King Airs.
 
“Solving contested logistics today takes proven autonomy and a proven airframe,” said Merlin CEO Matt George.
 
Introduced into commercial service in 2022, the Cessna 408 SkyCourier features a high-wing utility aircraft powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-65SC turboprop engines. The freighter version can carry up to 6,000 lb., and a 19-seat passenger variant is rated for 5,000 lb.
 
“The Cessna SkyCourier UX concept reflects our commitment to examining practical solutions to real-world mission challenges,” said Bob Gibbs, Textron’s vice president for Defense and Special Mission Sales.
 
The concept is evaluating additional modifications for unloading cargo in the absence of a crew. Options include replacing the cockpit with a forward-loading cargo architecture, aircraft kneeling capability and an integrated loading system.
