SINGAPORE—Saab expects partner Embraer to deliver the first Gripen E from a new Brazilian assembly line to the country’s air force before April in what would be the first of several milestones for the fighter program this year.
That handover will be followed by the delivery of the first Gripen F from Saab’s Linkoping production line in the second quarter, with a first flight soon after, says Mikael Franzén, Gripen chief marketing officer, at the Singapore Airshow.
The company also plans to deliver a software enhancement package, called MS22-1, that will enhance sensor fusion and deliver other improvements. It also expects to deliver an electronic warfare simulator to help build threat libraries and see how the aircraft’s jamming system performs.
Saab also intends to fly further artificial intelligence (AI) agents on Gripen, Franzén says. The company last year flew an AI agent developed by European firm Helsing and then Saab flew its own agent later, he notes.
“We will do more tests,” Franzén says. “AI is here to stay. We need to develop and work with that as much as we can.”
