BEIJING—Avic Guizhou has flown the first aircraft of an improved version of the JL-9G trainer that it appears to be pitching at a Chinese naval training requirement.
The first flight occurred on May 12, the company said.
Avic Guizhou said in March it was determined to win a new victory with JL-9G development. The statement was accompanied by a generated image showing a JL-9G flying over a Chinese aircraft carrier, raising the possibility that a new version would be designed for shipboard operation.
Earlier JL-9Gs already serve as trainers for the navy but on land. The first unit of the new version was painted in the same red and white colors as those naval aircraft.
