HOUSTON—Retired U. S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas K. Mattingly II, who served as NASA’s Apollo 16 mission command pilot and went on to lead two space shuttle missions, has died. Mattingly passed away on Oct. 31, according to a NASA tribute released Nov. 2. He was 87, according to his NASA biography...

While at the Houston Chronicle, he was recognized by the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement Foundation in 2006 for his professional contributions to the public understanding of America's space program through news reporting.
