British and U.S.-based wings of Italian defense giant Leonardo are teaming with privately held U.S. defense specialist Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) to boost defense electronics sales in the U.S. and to allies.

Leonardo UK and its U.S.-based subsidiary, Leonardo Electronics US, signed a memorandum of understanding with SNC, the companies said July 17. SNC—which counts more than 40 sites across 19 U.S. states—will buttress Leonardo in America, while Leonardo will incorporate Sierra Nevada’s offerings as part of airborne sensor sales to customers in the European, Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.

The companies said they have worked together on several projects to date, with SNC tapping Leonardo to be its radar supplier of choice for maritime patrol aircraft. SNC chose Leonardo to supply its Osprey 50 E-scan surveillance radar for the Rapcon-X intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

“The companies are looking toward future joint projects,” the announcement said. “This could include expanding the firms’ collaboration relating to the Rapcon-X family of systems, as well as opportunities in the electronic warfare domain, drawing on products such as the Leonardo Sage Electronic Support Measure system.”
